Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa launches free Amma Drinking Water Scheme
As quality drinking water is one of the most essential and basic necessity for living, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has promised to solve the problem of non – availability of adequate and quality drinking water in the state, mainly for the poor and backward classes. The ruling Govt. is AIADMK in Tamil Nadu and its Chief Minister is Smt. J Jayalalitha. She has launched free mineral drinking water scheme for the poor residing in the urban areas.
Who are eligible for the Amma Drinking Water Scheme?
This scheme launched by Smt. Jayalalitha is for the poor and backward masses living in the urban areas of the state. They live in immense poverty and do not have the access of safe and hygienic drinking water. So the govt. has decided to give free drinking water which will be treated and purified, to the poor families. To get free drinking water under this scheme, it is essential to possess a smart card which will be distributed soon by the Govt.
Quality of the drinking water to be provided
The Tamil Nadu Govt. has promised to provide water for drinking that is being treated by reverse osmosis procedure. Reverse osmosis is a water purifying technique which destroys the impurities and harmful elements of water and retains the useful minerals and makes it fit for drinking. The government has already some water treatment plants functioning. But it wants to build more and make this scheme of free mineral water distribution for poor urban families a successful one.

The Tamil Nadu Govt. has chalked out a free drinking water distribution plan for the poor families living in slums of the cities and its adjoining areas. Under this scheme, it will distribute 20 liters of mineral water to each poor family every day. They can get this free drinking water by using their smart cards that will soon be provided to them. Work done so far in similar drinking water projects
As per the Chief Minister’s Office, the AIADMK govt. has made an expenditure of more than Rs. 7,000 crore on similar drinking water schemes in the past by setting up several water treatment and purification plants in the state. Earlier, the Govt. had launched another scheme of selling packaged mineral drinking water at a very low rate of Rs. 10, which is almost half the price in markets.
