The state govt. of Tamil Nadu has launched a scheme for the students of the Govt. schools and Govt. colleges. Under this scheme, the Govt. will distribute laptops for free. These laptops are given to those who have secured a certain percentage in the school examinations and secure eligibility to get the free laptop from the Tamil Nadu Govt. The same is applicable to those studying in government colleges. This laptop giving scheme was originally launched by the Jayalalitha Govt. in the year of 2011 and was planned to complete the project in different phases.
Need of laptops for school and college students
The AIDMK government felt that providing digital education right from the beginning is very important. The knowledge of computers must be given right from the school level. So those students who study in Govt. schools and colleges were aimed to be distributing free laptops. Also the Govt. undertaking schools were also included in this scheme. The free laptop distribution will be done in Class X level and Class XII level of school students and for colleges, the first year and third year is selected.
Number of laptops to be given
Under the free laptop scheme for school and college students in Tamil Nadu, the AIDMK government has decided to give away nearly 33 lakh laptops to the students. This dream project of Jayalalitha is to be completed in different phases. The work is being started from September 2011. Each year there is a fixed mission of the number of laptops to be distributed. In the year of 2015, the mission was to distribute 11 lakh laptops to the Govt. school and college students of Tamil Nadu.
Eligibility criteria of the students receiving free laptops from TN Govt.
The for school students, the students must pass the class X level and class XII level of school examinations. For the college students of Govt. colleges, students must be in the undergraduate courses like Bachelor of Science (B. Sc.), Bachelor of Arts (B. A.), Bachelor of Commerce (B. Com.), etc. They will have to fill the application form of the scheme which no not needs any fee and submit it to subscribe for the free laptop scheme of the Tamil Nadu Govt.
Governing body administering the free laptop scheme for students in Tamil Nadu
This is the flagship project of the ruling party AIADMK in Tamil Nadu which was launched just after coming to power in 2011. This scheme is scheduled to be completed in five phases, the last phase to be completed by 2015 end. The entire scheme is launched under the leadership of Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalitha and is administered under the Ministry of Information and Technology, Govt. of Tamil Nadu. The Minister of Information and Technology, Shree M. N. Subramanian is the chairperson of the free laptop scheme and the scheme is developed by the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu Ltd. (ELCOT).

The laptops that are being distributed to the school and college students of Govt. schools and colleges for free by the Tamil Nadu Govt. have a standard technical configuration. As per the sources in the IT Ministry, the laptops that are being provided for free have a sound configuration which is more than enough for the school and college students to make use of it I their studies. The laptop features the latest Intel Pentium Dual Core processor and has the standard Windows 7 or Linux operating system. They have primary memory of 2 GB ad secondary memory of 320 GB. These laptops come with a one year warranty.
Manufacturers for the free laptops for Tamil Nadu Govt.
The two major laptop making companies to grab the tenders of the free laptops for students in Tamil Nadu are Lenovo and HCL. A total of 33 lakh laptops were tendered from these two companies. The development team of these laptops is ELCOT which puts the operating system in the laptops which is in two languages – Tamil and English. Both brands are hugely popular in the laptop markets. These laptops also have a warranty card for one year from the date of distribution.
Warranty statement of ELCOT regarding the free laptops
ELCOT is providing one year warranty on the laptops that are being distributed to the school and college students for free. The date of start of warranty is the date on which the school or college has taken charge of the laptops from ELCOT. A warranty card is provided by the ELCOT which has a list of service centers to be visited in case of malfunctioning during the warranty time. This warranty card also has the stamp of the school or college along with the name and address of the beneficiary.

Success story of the free laptop scheme of TN Govt.
According to the AIADMK Government, the scheme to distribute free laptops to school and college students has seen a success ratio of 100 per cent over the course of five years of its launch. Till now, approximately 31.76 lakh students have received free laptops in the state. According to studies, there has been a sharp increase in the number of students who are doing enrollment for higher studies. The literacy rate in the state has also increased gradually. The students are more technologically educated and are more accustomed with the digital era.
